Elinor H. Wible
1924–2012
A gifted athlete, devoted educator, successful business owner, and faithful servant, Elinor H. Wible lived a life defined by excellence, integrity, and a deep love for family, faith, and community.
Over nearly five decades of competitive play, she won 48 American Legion Country Club championships and 25 Central Counties championships, records that stand as the benchmark for ALCC golf. In 1998, she was inducted into the Huntingdon County Sports Hall of Fame.
Educator
Wible graduated from Saltillo High School in 1941 and from Bucknell University in 1945 with a B.S. in Business Education. She went on to teach at both Mount Union High School and Saltillo High School.
Businesswoman
She owned and operated Wible Bottling Works, Inc. of Three Springs and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Lewistown from 1962 to 1984, building and running a successful business while raising a family.
Faithful Servant
A faithful member of First Baptist Church in Three Springs, Wible served as a youth leader, deaconess, Sunday school teacher, and pianist. She was also a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 280.
Community Leader
Wible was a member of the Three Springs Historical Society, an honorary member of the Three Springs Volunteer Fire Company, and served as Grand Marshal of the Three Springs Memorial Day Parade in 2001 — a lifelong supporter of her community.
Sports Illustrated
Wible was featured in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” on November 10, 1986: “Elinor, a retired businesswoman, won her 45th club golf championship at the American Legion Country Club in Mount Union by beating Brenda Diven, 19, by one stroke, with an 83.”
LPGA
She competed in the 22nd Women’s Western Open at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club near Philadelphia, June 18–23, 1951 — one of the premier championships in women’s golf, played alongside LPGA legends Patty Berg, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Louise Suggs, and Betsy Rawls.
Family Legacy
Wible was the loving wife of Clair C. Wible (1948–1988) and a proud mother of three daughters: Patricia Scott, Marcia Kuhns, and Sheryl Flick. A loving grandmother, great-grandmother, and step-great-grandmother, her legacy is continued by her family at ALCC through the Elinor Wible Memorial Golf Tournament, held each June.
“For nearly five decades, she set the standard of excellence on the golf course and in life. Her legacy continues to inspire generations.”
