Fall Classic

Launched in 2015, the Fall Classic is ALCC's late-season showdown — a two-person better ball event that expanded to a 2-day format with a Sunday scramble shootout starting in 2024.

About This Event

Launched in 2015, the Fall Classic quickly became one of the marquee events at American Legion Country Club. Known as a late-season showdown, it offered golfers one final chance to compete for a major title before the close of the year.

For nearly a decade, the format was an 18-hole two-man better ball event, with flighting determined by scores on nine randomly chosen holes. This structure kept competition balanced and pressure high, producing champions whose names are now etched into club history.

In 2024, the Fall Classic entered a new era — expanding into a 2-day event. Saturday remains a traditional better ball round, but Sunday now features a club-favorite 18-hole shootout, scramble style, adding more excitement, strategy, and opportunities for dramatic finishes. The change has made the Fall Classic not only a test of skill but also a celebration of fall golf and camaraderie at ALCC.

Newspaper coverage from 1990 also documents a “10th Annual Mount Union Fall Two-Ball,” an earlier late-season two-person team tradition at the club dating back to roughly 1980–81 — that year’s tournament drew a record 68 teams competing in both scratch and handicap divisions, with the scratch winners shooting a 5-under 65 and the handicap winners a 13-under 61. It’s not confirmed whether this earlier event is a direct predecessor of today’s Fall Classic or a separate chapter in the club’s late-season team-event history.
