Course Overview
American Legion Country Club's course winds through the hills of Mount Union, offering a mix of challenging par 4s, scenic elevation changes and a layout that rewards thoughtful play. Whether you're a low-handicap regular or a weekend golfer, the layout rewards smart course management.
Our grounds crew is actively working to restore the affected greens under the direction of our superintendent.
The original 18-hole layout traces back to golf course architect Tom Bendelow, who evaluated the site in 1924 and found the rolling terrain suitable for an 18-hole course. The first nine were in play by the clubhouse's formal opening in August 1927; the second nine followed during the next several years. Read the full club and course timeline.
Course heritage
A Layout Built in Stages
The course belongs to the larger story of the Juniata Valley Colony Club, a 1920s country-club and cottage development along the river. Bendelow supplied the early design vision. Club employees and local builders then turned farmland into playable golf ground over a period of years.
Contemporary accounts identify the first nine as playable in 1927 and credit superintendent William H. Griffith with constructing the last nine by 1931. Later generations reshaped and maintained the course while preserving its unusual mountain character - including the par-6 seventh hole.
