A Century of Central Counties Golf
Newspaper coverage of the Central Counties Golf Association traces back to at least 1927, when 32 golfers from 9 clubs competed in a qualifying tournament at the Blairmont Country Club course. By 1941, the association had grown to 11 member clubs for its 18th annual tournament, hosted at Tyrone.
ALCC’s own golfers have a long record in the event: Elinor Wible won the Women’s Golf Association crown in 1953, beating the defending champion 1-up on the 20th hole. Ed Strickler (Huntingdon) won his 8th Central Counties title in 1985 with a comeback over the final round. In 1994, Greg Ferguson (SVCC) won by 2 strokes over 36 holes at Penn State’s Blue Course, with 73 golfers representing 8 of the association’s then-13 member clubs.
