Historical Archive

The records behind the club, the course, and the people who kept both going.

Golf files + local history research

A Working Archive, Not Just a Scrapbook

The source collection combines day-to-day club records with a much longer historical trail. Tournament files preserve names, scores, logos, tee sheets, and event practices. Newspaper pages and photographs recover the earlier course, the Colony Club cottage community, the 1936 flood, and the transition to American Legion ownership.

Duplicate exports, software dependencies, and print-production files were separated from original records when counting the collection. The totals below describe the usable Golf archive and the course-related material identified in the broader History archive.

Newspaper evidence

The Surviving Paper Trail

Because the 1936 flood destroyed club records, newspaper coverage is especially important for the early decades. The archive now links those early reports to the tournament and club records that survive from later years.

1924–1931

Formation, Bendelow’s course letter, clubhouse construction and opening, early seasons, club officers, finances, and completion of the second nine.

1936–1951

Flood losses, trustee sales, American Legion purchase and development, wartime interruption, the 1947 addition, and preservation of championship trophies.

1952–1975

Mount Union Opens and Invitationals, course records, club championships, the 1967 retrospective, and the start of the modern June Invitational.

1976–2005

Annual June Invitational coverage, club champions, notable local golfers, Elinor Wible’s career, and Frank Stasenko’s work with Mount Union golf.

2006–2026

Tournament results and photos, charity events, club operations, the June Invitational’s 50th and 52nd editions, and the club’s expanded role after the 2026 Stone House fire.
